Juniper
Juniper berries are found on the evergreen juniper shrub, which grows widely throughout the Northern Hemisphere. Juniper berries have been used traditionally to support the urinary system and help the body maintain proper fluid balance. In European folk medicine, juniper berries were also used for head discomfort, as well as sore and swollen joints. Juniper berries also help stimulate the production of digestive fluids and have been used to settle the stomach and improve appetite. Plus, juniper berries may support pancreatic function and help the body regulate blood sugar levels.
Slippery Elm
Slippery elm is a species of elm native to eastern North America. Slippery elm contains up to 50% mucilage, which supports delicate body tissues. When mixed with water, the soft, inner bark of the slippery elm tree becomes gel-like and soothing. Slippery elm has been used traditionally to soothe and protect mucous membranes such as those lining the urinary tract, potentially reducing irritation. Slippery elm also absorbs toxins from the bowel and helps maintain normal elimination.
Licorice
Licorice root has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for thousands of years to nourish the kidneys, support the glandular system, and promote vitality. Licorice root has a reputation for helping the entire body maintain balance and for promoting well-being. Plus, licorice root may help soothe irritated tissues and relieve redness and swelling, due to active compounds that promote a healthy inflammatory response.
Garlic
Garlic is a natural immune booster and powerful antioxidant that supports cardiovascular health. Research shows that garlic supports normal-range blood pressure and cholesterol levels, maintains blood vessel health, and promotes a healthy inflammatory response. Garlic also promotes digestion. Plus, animal studies suggest that garlic may have beneficial effects on blood sugar regulation. Garlic compounds like allicin may enhance insulin sensitivity and improve glucose uptake by cells.
Yarrow
Yarrow has been traditionally used as a bitter digestive tonic and may also support the immune system and healthy glandular function. Yarrow may also benefit liver health by stimulating bile flow to assist the digestion of fats. Modern research suggests that yarrow may influence blood sugar metabolism, which may be due to its natural chromium content.
Capsicum
Best-known for its ability to stimulate circulatory activity, capsicum supports healthy blood pressure, strengthens the heart, and helps promote blood flow in the extremities. Capsicum also stimulates the release of digestive fluids. Capsicum contains the active ingredient capsaicin, which is responsible for the herb's hot sensation on the tongue. Studies suggest that capsaicin can increase insulin levels, improve glucose tolerance, and enhance insulin sensitivity.
Goldenseal
Goldenseal provides proven immune system support. Goldenseal root contains powerful alkaloids—berberine, hydrastine and canadine—that help the body maintain strong immunity. These constituents have been known to help support the mucous membranes that line the urinary tract. Research suggests that berberine may help prevent foreign invaders from sticking to the lining of the bladder and urethra. Plus, berberine has been shown to support gut health, which directly affects the immune system.
Uva Ursi
Uva ursi has traditionally been used to help ease irritation of the urinary tract and support healthy urinary function. Uva ursi has natural diuretic properties that help flush out fluids from the body, reducing swelling and lowering the presence of foreign invaders at the same time. Plus, uva ursi provides urinary astringent actions and helps support healthy microbial balance in the bladder and urinary tract. Uva ursi leaf contains arbutin, an active ingredient that combats harmful microorganisms in the urinary system and promotes a healthy inflammatory response.
Dandelion
Herbalists consider dandelion to be one of the most nutrient-rich in the plant kingdom, as it's a source of many important minerals and vitamins. The entire plant is edible and the roots have long been associated with digestion and hepatic (liver) health. Dandelion has also been used traditionally to encourage urine output as an aid to flushing out the urinary tract. Plus, dandelion is reported to have tonic effects on the gallbladder and has been used for maintenance of the pancreas.
Marshmallow
Marshmallow root is well-known for its soothing properties, especially for the mucous membranes. Since the urinary tract and bladder are lined with these protective membranes, marshmallow helps the body get rid of irritating substances that often collect or stick to these membranes. Some research suggests that marshmallow root may also act as a natural and mild diuretic to flush out excess fluid.
Nettle
Nettle leaves are abundant in fiber and are a nutritious source of antioxidants and essential vitamins and minerals, including calcium, iron, potassium, zinc and silica, plus vitamins A, K, B-vitamins, and vitamin C, which helps the body absorb iron and other minerals found in the plant. Research suggests that nettle leaf may support glucose metabolism. Nettle potentially helps the pancreas produce and release insulin and also helps reduce the intestinal absorption of glucose.
