Devil's Claw root supports the structural and immune systems.
Devil's claw, a plant native to southern Africa, owes its name to the "hooked" fruit it bears. The small hooks get caught on animals and in this way, the plant's seeds are spread.
No surprise that its botanical name, harpagophytum, means "hook plant" in Greek.
Devil's claw has traditionally been used to help relieve muscle and joint soreness and improve mobility.
Other common uses noted for devil's claw include digestive complaints, head discomfort and lower back discomfort, and skin problems.
Devil's claw has been used in Europe, most notably in Germany, since the early 1900s to improve digestion and appetite, and to help with musculoskeletal discomfort and soreness.
Greater than 90% of the global supply of devil’s claw comes from wild harvesting in Namibia. Roots must be at least four years old before they can be harvested.
Devil’s claw root, a traditional medicine of the San and Khoikhoi peoples of southern Africa, has been used for a variety of health concerns, including blood conditions, joint discomfort, fever, head discomfort, lower back discomfort, digestive problems, menstrual cramps, and soreness following childbirth.
Native peoples also apply devil's claw topically to promote relief and tissue healing of boils, sores, sprains, burns, wounds, and even snakebites.
Devil's claw is regarded as a bitter tonic that stimulates the production of digestive fluids, helps restore appetite, and provides relief of minor digestive disorders such as intestinal gas and bloating.
The bitter taste of devil's claw is attributed to active substances in the plant called iridoid glycosides.
These bitter compounds also have strong antioxidant effects and appear to support a healthy inflammatory response.
