Cascara Sagrada
Cascara sagrada helps cleanse the colon of damaging toxins and waste. It acts as a natural herbal laxative, increasing the content of water in the bowel and stimulating the movement of the intestines to promote the emptying of the colon. The end result is that toxins spend less time in the bowel, thereby reducing the time that they can affect intestinal cells or be absorbed into the body. Cascara’s hydroxyanthracene derivatives also support the body’s detoxification processes.
Hawthorn
Hawthorn berries, well-known as a heart-supporting herb, have long been used to support the heart muscle and cardiac function. Hawthorn berries contain flavonoids and other compounds (volatile oils, saponins, alkaloids, vitamins and minerals) that benefit the heart and circulatory system health. Their circulatory benefits are well-studied. Hawthorn berries may also increase the efficiency of nerve impulses in, and protect against oxygen deprivation of, the heart muscle, as well as enhance heart muscle function.
Papaya
Papaya fruit contains enzymes that aid digestion and help relieve stomach discomfort, including belching, gas and nausea. Papaya is the only known food to contain papain, a powerful enzyme that helps break down meat and other proteins. Papain's digestive activity also extends to carbohydrates and fats. Papaya contains other enzymes that help break down starches and milk protein. Papaya naturally contains dietary fiber, which promotes satiety (feeling full) and can help reduce overeating.
Licorice
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has relied on licorice root to provide digestive system support and to promote vitality. Licorice root has a reputation for helping the entire body maintain balance and for promoting well-being. Licorice root is also a popular herbal remedy for gastrointestinal and liver support, gently supporting peristalsis (wave-like muscle contractions that move food through the digestive tract) and overall digestion. Licorice root contains active compounds that may have positive effects on fat metabolism, potentially reducing fat mass and aiding weight managmeent efforts.
Black Walnut Hulls
Black walnut hulls have proven to be an effective yet gentle support to the intestinal system, prized for their cleansing properties. Black walnut has been used by herbalists for targeted detoxification for hundreds of years. Black walnut also supports the immune system. Black walnut is a rich source of chromium, a trace mineral that supports healthy blood sugar balance. Black walnut hulls are also high in iodine, an important mineral that helps nourish the thyroid gland and supports thyroid function and healthy metabolism.
Chickweed
Chickweed is an edible and nutritious plant native to Europe. Chickweed has traditionally been used to support the glandular and urinary systems, and may help to reduce excess "water weight" by enhancing urine flow. Chickweed also aids weight management efforts by interfering with dietary fat digestion and absorption from the gastrointestinal tract. Plus, chickweed offers nutritional support for appetite regulation, due to its natural fiber content.
Fennel
Fennel seed helps soothe digestive disturbances and relax smooth muscles of the digestive and intestinal tract. Fennel seed is regarded as a traditional cleansing herb and is often used after eating to ease cramping, bloating and gas. Fennel seed also has mild diuretic properties, meaning it can help the body eliminate excess water and toxins. Fennel seed is a good source of dietary fiber, which can help you feel fuller for longer, potentially reducing overall calorie intake.
Dandelion
Dandelion is considered one of the most nutrient-rich in the plant kingdom as it's a source of many important minerals and vitamins. This ubiquitous plant supports digestion and is reported to have tonic effects on the liver and gallbladder. Traditionally used as a liver tonic, dandelion contains polysaccharides that may support liver function and help detoxify the liver. Animal studies show that antioxidants found in dandelion root (including caffeic acid and luteolin) may help protect the liver and support healthy cholesterol levels. Dandelion also supports healthy urinary function.
