How It Works
Echinacea
Named after the Greek ekhinos, meaning hedgehog (for its spiky, conical head), echinacea rose to immune system superstardom in the herbal revival of the 1970s. Several studies suggest that members of the echinacea genus contain polysaccharides, glycoproteins, alkylamides, volatile oils and flavonoids that promote the optimal function of the immune system.
Echinacea has been shown to stimulate the immune system by increasing activity of certain immune cells and by promoting the release of cytokines from these immune cells. Cytokines are cellular communication and regulatory molecules that enhance the immune system's response to attacks.
Echinacea triggers the body's white blood cells to attack unwanted invaders. According to research, echinacea can significantly increase the body's count of specialized white blood cells, including T-cells, interferon, interleukin and immunoglobulins. Echinacea also contains active substances that have antioxidant activity.
Goldenseal
Often called ‘the King of mucous membranes’ goldenseal root has been used traditionally in Western herbal medicine to reduce excess mucus and relieve mild upper respiratory tract congestion.
Goldenseal contains powerful alkaloids—berberine, hydrastine and canadine—that help the body maintain strong immunity and provide respiratory support for mucous membranes. These constituents have been known to help support the mucous membranes that line the respiratory, digestive and urinary tracts.
Research suggests that berberine may help prevent foreign invaders from sticking to the lining of these membranes. Plus, berberine has been shown to promote gut health, which directly affects the immune system.
