How It Works
Pau D'Arco
Pau d’arco (Tabebuia heptaphylla) trees grows in the rain forests of Brazil. But unlike other trees in its midst, the pau d’arco tree does not develop fungus growth, even though it grows in the most lush tropical rainforests in the world!
Scientists studying pau d'arco tree bark have found that it contains lapachol and beta-lapachone, two compounds that help this tree provide important anti-fungal properties. These active ingredients are noted for their activity against fungi and unfriendly microbes, which helps explain pau d'arco's use for fungal-related mild, superficial skin and nail conditions. Pau d'arco bark also contains significant amounts of quercetin, a powerful antioxidant known for its reputed effects in fighting free radicals that can damage the skin. Free radical damage contributes to the appearance of skin wrinkles and prematurely aged skin.
Shea Butter
Shea butter is a natural fat obtained from the fruit of the African shea tree that is known for its rich, moisturizing properties. Shea butter contains antioxidants, including vitamin A and vitamin E, which help prevent free radical damage to the skin—such damage can contribute to the appearance of skin wrinkles and prematurely aged skin. Shea butter has been used by people in Africa for centuries for various skin problems, to promote wound healing, and to help reduce scarring. Today, shea butter is added to many cosmetics due to its ability to form a protective barrier on the skin to prevent loss of moisture. Shea butter also helps soothe skin irritation and redness.
Coconut Oil
Coconut oil is known to be a safe and effective moisturizer that improves skin hydration, provides antioxidant protection, and softens and soothes the skin. Coconut oil can help improve the skin barrier which may reduce moisture loss. Coconut oil contains fatty acids that help heal dry and broken skin, while protecting against harmful microorganisms in the process. The fatty acids in coconut oil also help soothe mild skin irritations such as scratches or razor burns.
Macadamia Oil
Macadamia oil is derived from macadamia nuts (seeds) and is known for its moisturizing properties and ability to retain moisture in the skin. Macadamia oil is high in moisturizing fatty acids that help soothe dry or itching skin. It also contains vitamin E, a natural antioxidant. Similar to the skin's natural oils, macadamia oil is lightweight, non-greasy, easily absorbed, and able to penetrate the skin to maintain moisture and nourish the skin.
Olive Oil
Olive oil is one of the primary sources of oleic acid, a long-chain fatty acid favored for its use in enhancing the transdermal (through the skin) delivery and absorption of active ingredients in topical preparations. Olive oil is said to have a protective toning effect on the skin and to positively influence the skin’s moisture content. Olive oil also contains bioactive polyphenols that can significantly reduce wrinkles and promote skin health.

Quality
Harvesting pau d’arco is no easy task, but it’s worth the trouble. Pau d’arco wood is extremely popular as a building material, and because of this, the trees have been overharvested. They are an endangered and protected species in Brazil. So their government closely regulates the harvest and requires a permit for anyone to transport, trade or export any part of the tree.
