Chamomile
Chamomile is a time-honored herbal calming aid, boosting the body's abiliies to support digestion and combat stress. Chamomile is one of the oldest and most well documented medicinal plants in the world. People drink more than 1 million cups of chamomile tea every day. Taking chamomile is known to soothe nerves and promote restful sleep. Chamomile flowers have nervine qualities, which can help the body cope with tension and calm feelings of anxiousness and restlessness to help promote more restful sleep. Chamomile also stimulates and supports digestive function.
Passionflower
Passionflower is widely recognized for its variety of relaxing benefits. Passionflower provides natural support to the relaxation centers of the nervous system and has been used historically as a mild calmative to help with restlessness. The flavonoids in passionflower are believed to support healthy nervous system function and provide a sense of calm. Many have found that passionflower also helps with relaxation of tense muscles. Plus, passionflower can be used to help promote a restful night’s sleep.
Hops
Hops do more than add flavor and foam to your beer. Hops are a traditional aid for sleep and nervousness. Hops have a calming effect on the nervous system and are a common ingredient in products used to promote restful sleep and relaxation. Hops have also been used to soothe feelings of anxiousness and restlessness. A recent study demonstrated that hops extract improves the body’s response to stress and anxiousness. Hops contain the flavonoid xanthohumol, which possesses antioxidant properties and may help relax blood vessels and improve blood circulation.
Fennel
Fennel is an aromatic herb that helps soothe digestive disturbances and relax smooth muscles of the digestive and intestinal tract. Fennel is regarded as a traditional cleansing herb and is often used after eating to ease cramping, bloating and gas. Fennel has also been traditionally used to help ease feelings of stress and anxiety and promote relaxation, potentially improving sleep quality, which is often affected by stress.
Marshmallow
Marshmallow root is well-known for its soothing properties, especially for the mucous membranes. Marshmallow naturally contains mucilage, which provides demulcent (soothing) effects on the digestive and intestinal systems. Since the stomach and intestines are lined with these protective membranes, marshmallow eases irritation in the gastrointestinal tract and may help counteract excess stomach acid, reducing discomfort associated with stress-related digestive issues.
Feverfew
Feverfew has a long history of use in traditional and folk medicine, especially among Greek and early European herbalists. Ancient Greek physicians used feverfew to relieve all kinds of aches and discomfort, including women’s monthly troubles and soreness resulting from injury and falls. Feverfew has also been used traditionally for fever symptoms, head and joint discomfort, and problems with menstruation and labor during childbirth. Feverfew has even been called “medieval aspirin” or “aspirin of the 18th century.”
