Psyllium has been part of Indian Ayurvedic Medicine for nearly 5,000 years! It grows natively in India and parts of Asia and has been used to support gut health and to aid elimination. Psyllium hulls, also called husks, are the outer layer of psyllium seeds. Psyllium hulls support gut health and elimination by making the passage of stool easier, which helps support bowel regularity and health.
Rich in a soluble fiber called mucilage, psyllium hulls absorb several times their weight in liquid, forming a thick gel that adds bulk to digested food and waste and eases the movement of stool through the large intestine. The mucilage in psyllium hulls also provides a soothing effect on mucous membranes lining the intestines.
Soluble fiber from psyllium hulls also interferes with the absorption of emulsified fat from the small intestine and encourages the elimination of these bound fat molecules. Psyllium hulls also slow the absorption of dietary sugar and may help reduce the amount of dietary cholesterol in the bloodstream, helping the body maintain cholesterol levels already within the normal range and supporting cardiovascular health.
Plus, psyllium hulls fiber may provide a feeling of fullness and help reduce food intake, enabling you to eat less while staying satisfied longer.
People have been known to bake psyllium hulls into bread and pasta to enhance the texture, binding, moisture, and overall food quality, particularly in gluten-free baking.
Hibiscus
Hibiscus flowers have been used for centuries as both a delicious cultural beverage and as a traditional medicine. Hibiscus has a tangy, tart flavor similar to that of cranberries and is a popular flavoring used in food and beverages. Hibiscus has been traditionally used in folk medicine as a natural diuretic and mild laxative. Modern research studies suggest that hibiscus may support liver health and function and may help the body maintain normal-range blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol levels. Hibiscus is rich in powerful antioxidants such as beta-carotene (vitamin A), vitamin C and anthocyanins.
Licorice
Licorice root, a key part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for thousands of years, is known as “The Great Detoxifier” and is regarded as one of the most effective herbal medicines for reducing toxicity. Licorice root is used to nourish the liver and provide digestive system support. Licorice root also has a reputation for helping the entire body maintain balance and for promoting well-being and vitality. And, licorice root gently supports peristalsis (wave-like muscle contractions that move food through the digestive tract) and overall digestion. Licorice root may also help increase mucus production in the stomach, which can soothe the stomach lining and promote healing of irritated tissues. Plus, licorice root contains active compounds that may help maintain normal-range blood sugar levels.
Proprietary blend of Psyllium hulls, Hibiscus flowers and Licorice root.
We get our non-GMO-certified psyllium from a trusted partner in northwest India where the climate is perfect for this crop. There, local farmers sow it in spring as long as the monsoon rains don’t threaten.
After harvest, plants are processed nearby, and the seeds are taken to local markets for trade with companies that harvest the tiny hulls. The fair pricing agreements we have in place via our partner allow growers to provide for their families.
