Dong Quai
Dong quai root, pronounced “don kwy,” is considered the queen of herbs by the Chinese. It is China’s most popular herb for women and contains nutrients that female glands need. Dong quai has been used in TCM for thousands of years specifically for PMS and sexual health. Also known as female ginseng, dong quai benefits the circulatory, nervous and immune systems and has been used by Chinese physicians to enrich the blood, as well as regulate menstruation, calm nerves and soothe the intestines. Active compounds found in dong quai appear to increase uterine tone and help relax uterine muscles.
Blessed Thistle
Blessed thistle has been acclaimed by herbalists as a feminine tonic for the female reproductive organs. Blessed thistle supports the female reproductive system and has been used traditionally to help relieve discomfort during a woman's menstrual cycle. Blessed thistle also assists liver function and helps improve digestion.
Licorice
Licorice root has been a key part of many Chinese herbal formulas for thousands of years. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has relied on licorice root to provide respiratory, digestive and reproductive system support. Most Chinese herb combinations use licorice to balance the other herbs and to promote vitality. It has a reputation for helping the entire body maintain balance (particularly helpful to women who menstruate) and for promoting well-being. Licorice root is also regarded as an adrenal/pituitary tonic.
Eleuthero
Eleuthero root is an adaptogenic herb that supports energy and helps maintain balance in the body. Adaptogens help the body "adapt" to environmental stress, including physical and emotional stress. As an adaptogen, eleuthero acts as a tonic at the cellular level and offers beneficial support for the nervous system. Eleuthero is commonly used to support energy, stamina and endurance, and may help with concentration. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), eleuthero is also considered an adrenal tonic.
Sarsaparilla
Sarsaparilla root has been used for menstrual support by traditional herbalists. It may also be helpful for increasing urine flow to reduce fluid retention and stomach bloating. Sarsaparilla is often combined with herbs having similar properties to help with heavy menstrual bleeding, as well as to help balance hormones and relieve hot flashes. Sarsaparilla has also been used historically to support liver function and clean the blood by removing toxins from the body.
Black Cohosh
Black cohosh is widely known for supporting the mature woman’s body as she encounters normal glandular challenges and physical changes. Women have used it for decades to help “keep cool” during menopause. Black cohosh possesses mild estrogenic properties (phytoestrogens) and helps balance female hormone levels by binding to estrogen receptor sites. Balanced hormone levels help ease common menopausal symptoms. Low estrogen levels have been linked to common female reproductive problems. By supporting healthy hormone balance, black cohosh may help support a positive mood and help lift mild mood changes (so-called dark moods) that often accompany female discomfort. In addition, black cohosh is known to aid the structural and muscular systems.
Squawvine
Squawvine is a perennial evergreen plant native to North America. Squawvine's name honors it use by Native American women as a remedy for conditions related to the female reproductive system and childbearing. Squawvine is used traditionally to tone the uterine lining and prepare a woman's body for childbirth. It has also been used for discomfort during menstruation and to promote fertility.
False Unicorn
False unicorn grows in the eastern half of North America. Native Americans used this plant for women’s health, including menstruation and occasional nausea. As a result, European doctors later recommended it to help modulate menstruation. Today, herbalists commonly use false unicorn as a female reproductive system tonic.
